Illinois fans of 69-year-old actor Ron Perlman may have heard that he and his wife of nearly 40 years are divorcing. They have two adult children, a son and a daughter. The filing was made by Perlman’s attorney on his behalf and cited “irreconcilable differences” as the reason. Perlman’s wife is a jewelry designer.
The separation date on the divorce filing is May 10, 2019. It comes amid speculation that he is in a relationship with his “StartUp” costar Allison Dunbar. Dunbar has posted a number of photos of the two of them together on her Instagram account.
However, there has also been speculation that Perlman and his wife have an open marriage or live separate lives. Although Perlman has been married to his wife since 1981, according to one source, he behaved like a single man on the set and did not mention her.
Divorce can be a difficult process whether the marriage has lasted for four years or 40. While Perlman probably does not have to worry very much about having sufficient financial resources for retirement, this can be a concern for many older couples who end their marriage. Retirement accounts may be halved as part of the process of property division. Even though older couples may not have to worry about negotiating child custody and visitation, there can still be emotional repercussions for their adult children. Older adults who are considering divorce may want to consult an attorney about how to proceed and protect themselves financially. It is important to take the right steps in dividing retirement accounts. This can mean having a professional prepare a document called a qualified domestic relations order for certain types of accounts, such as 401(k)s, to avoid taxes and penalties. IRAs have a different set of requirements.
